Symphony of Northwest Arkansas Announces $50,000 Matching Grant

Deadline for match is November 16, 2013

(the date of SoNA’s opening concert of the 2013-2014 season)

Northwest Arkansas (February 4, 2013) — The family of Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Benward is pleased to honor their memory by providing a $50,000 matching grant to benefit the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas (SoNA). This gift launches SoNA’s Annual Campaign, and serves as a catalyst for others to support our region’s very own professional Symphony.

Dr. Benward served as Chairman of the Music Department and professor of music theory for two decades at the University of Arkansas and for thirty years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He also served as Florida State University's distinguished visiting professor of music theory. He earned his master's degree from Indiana University and his Ph.D. from Eastman School of Music.

During his career, Dr. Benward published several landmark music theory textbooks and was credited for being on the forefront of computer-assisted music instruction. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he was voted as one of the "Top 100 Educators."

The Benwards loved and supported the arts and it is the family’s desire to honor them for their past commitments. This grant will provide matching funds for all contributions to SoNA up to $50,000. This matching grant will continue until the first concert of the new SoNA season on November 16, 2013. A portion of these and the matching funds will go into SoNA’s endowment for long-term sustainability.

SoNA concerts have consistently filled Walton Arts Center’s Baum Walker Hall. The last two performances (Christmas Concert and Masterworks II) have been sell-outs.

To make a contribution toward this matching grant, or for more information about SoNA, please contact SoNA Executive Director Karen Kapella at (479) 521-4166 or karen@sonamusic.org.
